Collaborative U.Va. Project to Build Schools in Uganda

More than 700 students took turns riding stationary bikes in the pouring rain at a project fundraiser, held March 31 through April 4 on the Lawn, to raise money for a project to build schools for impoverished rural communities in Uganda through a partnership between U.Va.'s School of Engineering and Applied Science and its School of Architecture.

Groves Appointed Associate VP and Dean of Students

Allen W. Groves, a 1990 graduate of U.Va.'s School of Law, will become the University's associate vice president and dean of students on June 1. He has served as the interim dean for the past nine months. He succeeds Penny Rue, who resigned in August 2007 to become vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of California-San Diego.

FEST Supports Cutting-Edge Junior Faculty Research

Four rising faculty members have secured Fund for Excellence in Science and Technology Distinguished Young Investigator grants. Phil Arras, Noelle Dwyer, Avik Ghosh and Jing Yu will each receive $50,000 to support their forward-looking research proposals.

Psychology Expert to Join U.Va. Law School Faculty

Barbara A. Spellman, an expert in the field of psychology and the law, will join U.Va.'s Law School faculty in August. Spellman will hold a joint appointment, teaching half of her courses in the Law School and half in U.Va.'s Department of Psychology, where she has taught since 1997.

Powering Villages from Rice Husks Wins Competition

Two U.Va. Darden School of Business students -- Charles Ransler and Manoj Sinha -- won the Social Innovation Competition at the University of Texas this weekend for their innovative business plan that supplies electricity to rural villages in India by burning the rice husks that are a waste product of rice milling.

Top Colleges Dig Deeper in Wait Lists for Students

In what may be a happy surprise for thousands of high school seniors, Harvard plans to offer admission to 150 to 175 students on its waiting list, and Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania each expect to take 90, creating ripples that will send other highly selective colleges deeper into their waiting lists as well. ...At the University of Virginia, which also ended early admissions this year, John Blackburn, the dean of admission, said because he had received 3,200 deposits for a target of 3,170 freshman, he might not go to the wait list, unless an unusual number of students defect to other colleges. Mr. Blackburn said he considered the move from early admissions a success because it seemed that, as hoped, it had brought in more low-income students.
