Historians and hosts of the call-in radio show "BackStory," Ed Ayers, Brian Balogh and Peter Onuf write that expurgated passages from the Declaration of Independence actually illuminate the document's original purpose and underscore its powerful historical resonance. With today's crop of students more digitally connected than ever, some U.Va. professors in the School of Engineering and Applied Science are using blogs, podcasts, wikis and other forms of interactive Web-based technologies to improve their research and teaching. A fellows program called Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need is allowing five graduate students in U.Va.'s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to explore research opportunities in water resources and contaminant hydrogeology. Current research is focusing on improving drinking water, reducing malaria and other water sustainability issues. About 45 students and six teachers from Charlottesville city schools, plus University of Virginia staff and students, gathered recently for a closing ceremony marking the successful conclusion of the Summer Math Academy. The Campaign for the Arts at U.Va. has launched a new Web site to promote the overall plan to improve the study of arts at the University. The Campaign is focused on a new Art Museum, completion of the Drama Building and faculty funding. Long before he became known for his legal work on wrongful convictions, Professor Brandon Garrett wanted to be an artist. For years, he has balanced his career as a lawyer and legal scholar with his interest in painting, a pastime that has led to gallery exhibits and art sales.
